The Problem is the Solution - Clay Insulation

There are some that see a glass as 'half full' & others who see it as 'half empty'. In permaculture we see it as 'half full with the other half somewhere nearby'. Everything in nature has a purpose in the grand scheme & all we have to do is work out how it can help us. There are many who would bemoan a heavy clay soil, but not this person. Clay has many uses & the ponds they dug on this land never needed any lining to hold the water they use in their irrigation system. Here clay is being used as a building & insulating material around this oven. Notice the pipe top right that also conveys heated water from the stove to a hot tub nearby. See... permaculture doesn't have to mean hardship, quite the opposite, we design to make our lives easier!
