Biological Resources - The Natural Home

When we design we take stock of our local resources. Here in this working woodland community, timber is plentiful & the obvious local material to build with. As well as being biodegradable, natural materials create very beautiful dwellings as you can see here. This building has been thatched with reeds, whilst other buildings here are roofed using wooden shingles (tiles) instead. And there are other natural building materials that we can use to produce comfortable, well insulated homes; such as cob (clay subsoil mixed with mud), rammed earth & straw (bales). Green (turf or drought-tolerant plant covered) roofs are also becoming popular, providing beauty & insulation, even on some large urban buildings.
