Edge - Ponds

Nature demonstrates to us that the most productive areas are at the boundaries between two habitats. There we will find species that live in both habitats, along with those that are completely unique to that boundary. Edges also collect fertility (i.e. fertile silt settles in the shallows of ponds & windblown leaves & debris are collected at the bottom of fences). So in order to generate more yields for ourselves we should maximise edge in our design. Ponds are a fine example of where we can design using this principle. Most pond species live in the shallows & very little goes on in the centre of a body of water. So to maximise a pond's productivity we just need to give it some wavy edges (the common circular pond design has the least edge for its surface area).
