Multiple Elements - Food Perhaps our most vital need in cool temperate climates is to be able to harvest enough to feed ourselves throughout the year. In the same way that nature provides many different food sources for her species, we need to ensure that we grow many different crops in our gardens. |

Modern farming techniques don't usually take this into account & many a famine in poorer countries has been caused by the tragic failure of a single (mono) crop. We have already seen how growing a single crop only fills a small niche in the landscape, so not making the best use of space, but it also 'puts all our eggs in one basket'. By growing many different species & varieties, we have a much greater chance of a good harvest. |
