Multiple Functions - A Fruiting Fence
In permaculture we also try to design so that anything we include has more than one function - preferably three or more. By doing so we create a lot more yields within our given space. Here we see two clear functions are being fulfilled by this planting.
We have a boundary fence (which isn't going to rot) & we have a fruiting pear hedge. This kind of set up could also provide us with a windbreak, though pears might not be the best species to choose for this purpose. Can you can think of some other functions we could fulfill here too? We could also introduce some diversity by planting & weaving in different varieties, aiding pollination & extending our harvesting season.
