Relative Location - Companion Planting We have already come across cooperative guilds (where species benefit from growing together) in the 'Basic principles' slideshow. Guilds utilise the concept of companion planting at a mutually beneficial level, but we can still place one species to benefit another even where there is no benefit in return. Observant gardeners have over time noticed that some plants benefit significantly from being planted near to others. Many aromatic herbs for instance are good at repelling the pests of other plants that we wish to protect, whilst some work instead by attracting the predators of those pests into the vicinity. Here garlic has been planted to help protect the salad leaves growing around it. |
