Relative Location - Microclimates

Here is another example of the importance of placement. A favourable microclimate created by the surrounding forest garden has been further enhanced for this young Mulberry tree by the siting of a small pond upon its south side - just like on the previous slide.

It helps the tree in two ways; by both reflecting additional sunlight up at the foliage & by storing the sun's heat during the day which is then released slowly at night. This relative placement has many more potential yields though, especially if we bring in other elements, such as those ducks, aquatic creatures, an understorey of shade tolerant species & make good use of the pond edge. Can you think of any more?
