We place the elements we need to give the most attention, in the places we visit most often. As the home is normally the key element we need to design around, we divide up our map into zones around this central focus. Zone 0 is the home & Zone 1 the area nearest to it (& also beside regularly walked paths); where we spend most time. This is where we place our intensive kitchen garden, where we can most easily care for it.
